Boulder Designs Gives Back to the Bold

The Warrior and Family Support Center at the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio had no signage to designate its location until Butch Mogavero, owner of Boulder Designs, offered to build them a boulder.

“At first, we thought it was somebody playing a trick on us because we’d never heard of such a thing,” said Judith Markelz, director of the Warrior and Family Support Center. “But then we looked up the company, and my whole staff got so excited about everything! It’s a wonderful gift…everyone who has walked into the building today has talked about this boulder.”

After many discussions on where to install it, the 3500-pound boulder prominently sits near the entrance of the Center at the corner of the 13-acre expanse where visitors can easily see it, thanks to a final decision from the center’s master gardener, John Carter. Markelz said lighting will be installed in the flower bed in which the boulder sits to keep it illuminated through the night.

The boulder was donated by Boulder Designs during the 2016 IFA Convention’s “Franchising Gives Back,” in which 60+ volunteers from the franchising community donated their time to help beautify the Warrior and Family Support Center’s grounds.

“When I heard that Franchising Gives Back volunteers would be helping with landscaping at the Wounded Warrior Center, I knew a boulder could be a nice feature, but I never expected it to be used as the primary sign for the Center,” said Mogavero. “I am thrilled that our boulder will make an impact on these beautiful grounds.”
