In 2011, the Columbia Moe's Co-Op, including franchisees Steve Taylor, Chris Smith, and Josh & Lindy Snyder, created an annual event to support local organization, Epworth Children's Home, an organization dedicated to aiding children who have experience abuse, neglect or significant loss. Each year in November, the Columbia Co-Op hosts an event called Burritos 4 Epworth where they sell burritos for $4 each and donate half of the proceeds from all seven Columbia-area locations to Epworth Children's Home.

Bert's Big Adventure is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization that provides a magical, all-expenses-paid, five day journey to Walt Disney World for children ages 5-12 with chronic and terminal illnesses and their families. Bert Weiss, the hose of the nationally syndicated morning radio show, The Bert Show, and his wife founded the organization in 2002. They accept applications not only from the Atlanta area, but also from Brunswick, GA; Charleston, SC; Dallas, TX; Fayetteville, AR; Fort Wayne, IN; Grand Forks, ND; Hot Springs, AR; Hugoton, KS; Huntington, WV; Jamestown, ND; Myrtle Beach, SC; Nashville, TN; SW Kansas, KS; Pierre, SD; and Tupelo, MS. Following the annual trip, they provide year-round support through initiatives such as the Reunion Adventures, the Fairy Godparent volunteer program and additional charitable services. The Reunion Adventures work to create a community of families that establish lasting friendships with others facing similar challenges. Because parents can't spend 24/7 at the hospital while their children are undergoing treatment or battling an illness, the Fairy Godparent provides children with a volunteer to spend time with while their parents are gone. Moe's has been working with Bert's Big Adventure for the past 3 years. Every Wednesday during the month of June, Moe's donates 10% of sales to Bert's Big Adventure. Last year, 65 Atlanta Moe's locations supported Bert's Big Adventure, but this past year four more locations have joined the cause. The efforts of Moe's helps to fund year-long programs such as the Reunion Adventures, as well as the annual journey to Walt Disney World. Along with the Wednesday initiative, Moe's caters several of the events that take place throughout the year for Bert's Big Adventure. Moe's provides free food for the Fairy Godparent celebrations that honor those who devote time to the children who are in the hospital. Moe's also attends and caters the sendoff party before the annual trip to Disney World and provides gift cards and gift packs for all families.

Cell Phones for Soldiers is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing cost-free communication services to active-duty military members and veterans. Cell phones are collected, wiped free of all personal information and recycled or sold for parts. All money is used to purchase prepaid international calling cards to provide free talk time for troops. Since 2004, they have provided over 2 million minutes of free talk time and have prevented more than 11 million cell phones from ending up in landfills. The Charlotte Moe's co-op leveraged a paid media buy on Time Warner Cable to join in a partnership to promote the Cell Phones for Soldiers program locally. Time Warner Cable ran a schedule on a variety of cable networks to announce Moe's as a drop off point for cell phones. As a thank you for donating a phone, customers received a FREE cup of queso. The goal of the campaign was to collect as many used cell phones as possible by reaching out to the community with outside media and communicating with our customers with signage in the restaurants. The dates of the campaign were May 11th through May 31st, to coincide with the Memorial Day holiday period. Two different spots lengths were produced (see attached). A 30-second announcement to promote the Cell Phones for Soldiers campaign ran for the first week, and during the second and their weeks, the 30-second announcement ran in rotations with a split 15/15 spot, marrying a 15-second Cell Phones for Soldiers spot with a 15-second Moe's Sriracha Nacho commercial. The goal of the split 30-second spot was to remind cable views of the fantastic food at Moe's that they can enjoy while participating in this worthwhile cause! Over 300 commercials aired on cable networks such as: SyFy, Animal Planet, Comedy Central, CMT, Fox Sports and TV Land. These commercials aired in 3 different Time Warner cable zones in order to cover our 15 restaurants located in 6 counties. Facebook posts were included in our rotation of social media to further reinforce the campaign (see attached). In-store signage (see attached included: Large sign, Counter card in a Lucite holder * Collection box Also a 1-sheeter was provided to each restaurant from the agency partner (MediaWorks) to explain the campaign to staff members (see attached). Our Charlotte co-op meetings provided a perfect opportunity for the franchisees to discuss the roll-out of the campaign. Topics included how to educate the crew about the details of the promotion to discussing the placement of the in-store signage to maximize the promotion while minimizing any impact on our seamless operations. The entire campaign (production, signage and on-air announcements) was at no cost to the co-op and was considered added value for the paid media buys scheduled throughout 2015.

Charity Entry by Ryan O’Hare

The Moe's location in Mentor has been open for less than a year and already has big dreams for giving back to the local community. Customers waited in line for 12 hours prior to the Mentor Grand Opening and local owners Ryan O'Hare, Thomas O'Hare and Paul Giggi wanted to recognize the community support. On top of awarding the first 50 entrants with a free burrito a week for a year, the restaurant offered $10 all you can eat dinner, with 100% of proceeds donated to the local Mentor High School Athletic Department. This fundraiser raised approximately $2,500. Since their grand opening in November, several spirit nights have been hosted to support the local high school lacrosse team, the local middle schools and more. 20% of the night's sales are awarded to the benefitting organization. O'Hare recognizes the difficulties that come with being a new location and describes their community outreach as a learning process. They plan to have at least 3 more spirit nights before the end of the year, benefitting not only the local school system but also other local organizations. Plans are also being made to have another larger fundraiser similar to their Grand Opening event, where 70% of the evening's proceeds will be given to the respective organization. "We want to be involved in every aspect of life in the community we operate within," said O'Hare. "It's important to us to do our part to ensure we are not just located in this region, but to also demonstrate that we are committed to those that are actively involved within our community."
