After a devastating fire caused by arson destroyed Boys & Girls Clubs of the Austin Area’s (BGCAA) 44-passenger bus, Sport Clips Haircuts, other businesses and individuals in the greater Austin community and beyond pulled together and raised enough funds in 48 hours to replace it. The new bus arrived earlier this year to serve the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Austin Area as the "leading youth development agency, serving 12,000 youth each year focusing on academic success, character & good citizenship and healthy lifestyles."

Sport Clips Haircuts celebrated the opening of its 1,500th location, which happens to be in Founder and CEO Gordon Logan’s hometown of Sumter, S.C., by giving back to area youth. The milestone opening was marked with a $15,000 donation to Toys for Tots to provide gifts to children in the state’s Sumter, Lee and Clarendon counties. The contribution from Sport Clips will enable the Marines of Detachment 1202 to put Christmas smiles on the faces of approximately 3,000 additional children in the local area.

Sport Clips Haircuts Founder and CEO Gordon Logan, and his wife Bettye, and local Team Leaders (franchisees) Zach and Sharon Payer presented the gift check to Harvey Senter, Toys for Tots regional coordinator, before a crowd of local dignitaries and guests at the store, located at 2621 Broad Street.

“Growing up here, I never imagined that my life would come full-circle, with the growth of Sport Clips bringing us to this day – the celebration of our 1,500th location, right here in my home town, surrounded by so many great friends. This is a special celebration for me… It’s a homecoming to the place where family and friends taught me about life, hard work and planted the seeds of entrepreneurship,” says Logan. “The fact that the brand my wife and I started in 1993 has a ‘sports theme’ likely took root when I was the sports editor here for the Edmunds High School newspaper. The Air Force took me to Texas, but I will always think of Sumter as home.

“Giving back through donations such as this is how we at Sport Clips put our values in action. We call it ‘haircuts with heart.’ We chose Toys for Tots for several reasons, one of them being the value it brings to children and families in the local community, and its close ties with military involvement. Sport Clips supports numerous veterans’ efforts, and you’ll see those in our store here in Sumter and all across the country. We happy to be a part of this community I call my hometown and in so many other neighborhoods and communities across the U.S. and in Canada.”

On hand for the event were Sumter Mayor Joe McElveen; City Manager Deron McCormick; Sumter County Chairman Vivian McGhaney and other County Council Members; County Administrator Gary Mixon; City of Sumter Chief of Police Russell Roark; Sheriff of Sumter County Anthony Dennis and other community leaders and citizens. Sport Clips Vice President of Marketing, Martha England attended, as well as Sport Clips Area Developers Eric and Rosemary Gozur.

As part of the opening celebration, the Sumter Sport Clips offered a free haircut in exchange for a new, unwrapped toy donation leading up the event. As an active part of the community, the Sumter Sport Clips will continue to participate in local and national philanthropies, as well as contribute to the local economy and provide jobs for around a dozen stylists and team members.

SAN ANTONIO (April 5, 2016) – Razors buzzed to life at the Sport Clips Haircuts National Huddle as more than 130 “Shave the Day” volunteers went bald and raised more than $110,000 in support of the St. Baldrick’s Foundation’s work in fighting childhood cancer. Sport Clips is St. Baldrick’s first national sponsor, and the franchise kicked off the partnership with an attempt to raise $50,000 and best a St. Baldrick’s record for number of heads shaved at the same time. Even Sport Clips Founder and CEO Gordon Logan, President Mark Kartarik, and Vice President of Operations Gordon Edward Logan got into the game, having their heads shaved and collectively raising more than $25,000, as part of the total, for the cause.

“This partnership is meaningful on so many levels, especially when we learned that one of our stylists has a young son fighting cancer,” says Martha England, vice president of marketing for Sport Clips. “Stylists at Sport Clips stores across the country have been participating in head shaving events for years. So, we decided to make it official and become a partner. It’s a good fit for us, since shaving heads is something we’re equipped and trained to do. And, we’re joining in the fight against cancer in local communities and nationally, like today, when we shaved heads at our own national convention.”

Derryk, son of a San Antonio Sport Clips stylist was the event's “honored kid." He was joined by Dr. Gregory Aune, himself a childhood cancer survivor and staff member at Children’s Hospital of San Antonio, who was on hand to cheer on the shavees. And, recognized haircare professional Robert Cromeans and David Wilks served as emcees for “Shave the Day.”

“The event is a success on so many levels, and we appreciate all of the San Antonians who came out to 'shave the day!' with us,” England says. “The exposure generated for St. Baldrick’s by breaking their record for the most heads shaved at one time, and far exceeding the fundraising goal we set toward the fight to fund research for a childhood cancer cure, is a win for all who participated!”

During a time of great concern for our nation's service members and their families, Sport Clips Haircuts launched its Help A Hero fundraising campaign in 2007 with the goal of connecting deployed and hospitalized U.S. service members with their loved ones through the Veterans of Foreign Wars Operation Uplink Free Call Days program. In the campaign's inaugural year, Sport Clips franchisees and team members joined together to collect donations in-store and in their communities, raising $87,000 for free calls home. From that point forward, Sport Clips Help A Hero campaign would take place annually, from mid-October through November 11, Veterans Day, during which $1 from every haircut given is donated to the program. Many Sport Clips stores also provide free haircuts to active-duty veterans and service members on Veterans Day to say thank you. As Sport Clips locations grew in number, so did its contributions to the VFW. In 2011, Sport Clips became the primary corporate sponsor of the VFW's Operation Uplink, and in 2012, the franchise exceeded the 2 million-mark for the number of Help A Hero-sponsored calls home. In 2013, with the drawdown in troops, Sport Clips set out on a new mission - to help returning U.S. service members make the transition from the battlefield to the workplace a little easier. In partnership with the VFW, Sport Clips expanded the focus of Help A Hero to introduce the VFW's Sport Clips Help A Hero Scholarship program. The Sport Clips-funded program provides scholarships, of up to $5,000, to service members and veterans who are pursuing their education at post-secondary schools, including trade schools. Not all U.S. service members qualify for 100% of the GI Bill benefits, and military TA has some limitations, so our program helps fill those gaps. During the campaign period, Sport Clips, Inc. equips the locations to support Help A Hero by providing fundraising kits, which include donation canisters, in-store signage, fundraising giveaways, themed wearables, and more. In addition to raising funds in-store, many Sport Clips team members go above-and-beyond by holding bake sales, silent auctions, free haircut events, and other activities to raise money. Further support for the campaign is provided by Sport Clips marketing team members and the VFW, who work together to build and execute an integrated marketing plan, which utilizes TV, radio, web assets, social media, and news media outreach to increase awareness of the cause. To continue to grow the number of service members and veterans Help A Hero is able to support, Sport Clips worked with its product partners, such as American Crew and Nioxin, to create Hero Deals product promotions. During designated time periods throughout the year, Sport Clips Hero Deal partners will give $1 for every featured product sold to Help A Hero. Since establishing the Help A Hero campaign in 2007, Sport Clips has contributed more than $3 million to support active-duty military and veterans through the VFW.

Sport Clips is the primary sponsor for The Ageless Aviation Dreams Foundation, a non-profit organization established and dedicated to honoring seniors and United States military veterans. Through donations, the foundation provides once-in-a-lifetime Dream Flights to veterans, many of whom served during WWII, in a Boeing Stearman biplane, the same aircraft used to train many military aviators in the late thirties and early forties.

In addition to monetary donations, Sport Clips also donates time to support Dream Flights, which take place almost every week in cities across the nation. Sport Clips franchisees and team members volunteer by helping veterans enter and exit the aircraft; providing refreshments and seating/shade for veterans and other visitors; and other activities. Sport Clips, Inc.s communications team has supported the growth of the organization by assisting with media outreach initiatives that have increased awareness of the organization, including securing a story with CBS This Morning and CBS Evening News in May, reaching a combined estimated audience of more than 8 million.

By supporting the important work of Ageless Aviation Dreams since 2013, Sport Clips goal has been to honor our nations elderly veterans, and through these flight experiences, show that their sacrifices and dedication to our nation have not been forgotten.

As veterans return home, they face numerous obstacles as they transition back into civilian life, including finding a career. In 2013, Sport Clips proudly partnered with the VFW to expand the focus of our national “Help A Hero” philanthropy to introduce the VFW's "Sport Clips Help A Hero Scholarship" program. By providing scholarships for use at post-secondary schools, including trade schools, our goal is to continue our strong support of the military while making the transition from the battlefield to the workplace a little easier. The support of Help A Hero by our hardworking Team Members and Team Leaders, Clients, and partners across the nation, enabled Sport Clips to raise more than $707,000 last year. Since being established, Sport Clips and the VFW have provided more than $830,000 in scholarships to military, and will continue to grant funds each semester. Sport Clips also continues to support phone calls home for deployed and hospitalized service members through the VFW’s Operation Uplink™ Free Call Days. n nAlthough our scholarship recipients’ career aspirations vary, these men and women all share a common desire to make a difference - this time, as civilians – and succeed for themselves, their families, and their country. One Help A Hero Spring 2015 scholarship recipient wrote:n n“By being awarded this scholarship I will be able to maintain the majority of my focus and time on school now that this financial burden has been lifted. It is organizations like yours that allow veterans to pursue their educational goals and break the trend of homelessness and unemployment... For this I thank you, along with my family, and veterans at home and abroad thank you for this wonderful opportunity."

On March 3, Sport Clips Haircuts announced its primary sponsorship of Ageless Aviation Dreams Foundation (AADF) to fund flight experiences for veterans living in long-term care communities throughout 2015. In its third year of supporting AADF, Sport Clips will help make 520 flights possible in cities across the U.S. this year…up from last year’s 436 flights in a restored 1940’s Boeing Stearman bi-plane. The first flight of the season took place in Kissimmee, Fla. on March 13. “It is so meaningful for these veterans to experience the thrill of boarding a plane that was used to train military aviators in the late ‘30’s and early ‘40’s, and take to the skies for the flight of a lifetime,” says Gordon Logan, founder and CEO of Sport Clips, himself an Air Force veteran. “This is a vestige of their military service, and to see the memories flooding back when they climb into the passenger seat is priceless. Making these flights possible is just one more way Sport Clips can say ‘thank you’ to those who have served our country.” AADF “Dream Flights” are made possible through sponsorships, such as Sport Clips’. AADF is a non-profit dedicated to honoring seniors and United States military veterans with the mission to “Give Back To Those Who Have Given.” For more information about AADF and Sport Clips-sponsored flights, visit agelessaviationdreams.org.
